A Bourbon Whiskey Map of the U.S. — Regional Character and 10 Iconic Bourbons
Benjamin J·6월 7, 2026·8 min read
Legally, bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States. But unfold an actual map and the story changes — about 90% of the world's bourbon comes from the single state of Kentucky. Why Kentucky of all places, and what different bourbons do Tennessee, Indiana, Texas, and New York distill? We've placed bourbon on a map of the U.S. and organized each region's character along with 10 iconic bourbons you should know, gathering bottle images, taste and aroma, and even what real enthusiasts have to say.
When choosing a bourbon, we usually look only at the brand. But knowing "where" that brand was made gives you the outline of its flavor first. Water, climate, grain, and aging environment differ by region, and those differences translate into the flavors in your glass. Let's start with the big picture.
A map of U.S. bourbon production (conceptual). The largest circle is Kentucky (KY), the heart of the world's bourbon, while Tennessee (TN), Indiana (IN), Texas (TX), New York (NY), and the emerging region of Colorado (CO) each add their own character.
Kentucky (KY) · About 90% of the world's bourbon. Classic caramel, vanilla, oak.
Tennessee (TN) · Tennessee whiskey, filtered through charcoal. Smooth and soft.
Indiana (IN) · MGP's home base. The hidden heart of high-rye spirit.
Texas (TX) · Intense heat ages it fast. Dark and bold.
New York (NY) · Small-barrel craft. Fast extraction, pioneer spirit.
Colorado · Midwest (CO) · Farm distilleries rooted in grain country are expanding.
Region by Region
Regional character, read from the map
Even the same "bourbon" has a different grain depending on its origin. To touch only the essentials, here's how it goes.
THE HEART · KENTUCKY
Kentucky — the heart of bourbon
Clean water from which limestone has filtered the iron, land where corn grows well, and white oak forests. The reference point for classic caramel, vanilla, and oak flavor — Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, Woodford, Elijah Craig, and Jim Beam all come from this land.
TENNESSEE
Tennessee — softness filtered one more time
It actually meets the conditions of bourbon, but by adding the "Lincoln County Process" of filtering through maple charcoal before barreling, it calls itself "Tennessee whiskey" (Jack Daniel's, George Dickel, Uncle Nearest). A smoother, rounder character is its hallmark.
INDIANA · MGP
Indiana — the hidden heart
Lawrenceburg's massive distillery MGP supplies spirit to countless brands nationwide. It rarely shows up on the label, but a good many of the "sourced bourbons" we drink come from here. It's especially strong in the high-rye style.
TEXAS
Texas — boldness forged by heat
Intense heat accelerates the exchange between spirit and wood, so even a short aging steeps in deep oak, vanilla, and caramel. The result is a darker, fuller-bodied, bolder bourbon. Garrison Brothers and Balcones are the standard-bearers.
NEW YORK · NORTHEAST
New York · Northeast — craft frontier
Cold winters and cool summers, plus fast extraction using small barrels. A craft spirit close to beer culture and regional codes like "Empire Rye" grow here. Hudson (Tuthilltown) and Kings County.
EMERGING
Emerging regions — a widening map
In grain country like Colorado (Breckenridge) and Iowa (Cedar Ridge), "farm distilleries" rooted there give regional color with grain they grow themselves. The bourbon map is still widening westward and northward.

01Jim Beam WhiteJim Beam White LabelKENTUCKY80 proof · 40%
The "default value of bourbon" you meet everywhere
Taste & aroma Caramel and vanilla over corn sweetness, with Jim Beam's signature peanut-nut nuance and light oak. Light-bodied and undemanding.
User reviews As the No. 1-selling Kentucky straight bourbon in the U.S., the dominant verdict is that it's the "entry/mixing standard." Its value (around 10,000 won) is overwhelming, but many also feel it's light and young for sipping straight, so many recommend it as a cocktail base for highballs, Coke, and the like.
A textbook "wheated bourbon" remembered for its softness
Taste & aroma Using soft winter wheat instead of rye, it has little bite, with the round sweetness of caramel and vanilla and a creamy texture. The red wax is its symbol.
User reviews Frequently named the "top pick for getting into bourbon." Many say its low harshness makes it easy to enjoy even for first-timers. That said, the opinion that it's somewhat simple for enthusiasts who want complexity coexists.
The ultimate value champion, everyone's reference point
Taste & aroma Vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar with toffee and oak, plus subtle fruit and mint. A smooth, balanced daily sipper.
User reviews So inoffensive that people say "I've never met anyone who dislikes it." The verdict that its quality-to-price is the best is overwhelming, but its high popularity also draws many complaints that it's "hard to find."
Taste & aroma Deep vanilla and toffee from a heavily charred barrel (char #4), rye spice and cinnamon-pepper, and toasted oak. Surprisingly smooth for its proof, yet hefty.
User reviews Among enthusiasts it's known as a "value cult." Praise like "it punches above its weight class" is common, and many say it's solid for daily drinking, on the rocks, and cocktails alike.

User reviews A fan favorite, with much rave like "this quality at this price is cheating." Both balance and depth are well received. Bear in mind that, as a single barrel, there's slight variation from bottle to bottle.
The official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, a refined honor student
Taste & aroma Honey, vanilla, and caramel apple with mint and dried fruit, oak, leather, and tobacco leaf. An elegant, smooth style.
User reviews Widely loved for its brand trust and refined flavor. That said, some enthusiasts find it "light and plain" compared with others in the same price range (Wild Turkey 101, Elijah Craig, etc.), and many say it shines especially in cocktails like the Mint Julep.

An oak-rich, value classic
Taste & aroma Deep caramel and vanilla with nuts and cherry, baking spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, toasty oak, and a touch of smokiness.

A spicy entry point + an all-purpose cocktail base
Taste & aroma Pepper and spice from its high rye content and dry oak, with honey, vanilla, cherry, and citrus. Clear and bold.
User reviews Often recommended as a "high-rye entry point + cocktail all-rounder." Reviewers say its flavor doesn't get buried even in an Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour. (Historically it used Four Roses spirit; its current source isn't disclosed.)
09Garrison Brothers Small BatchGarrison Brothers Small BatchTEXAS · Wheated94 proof · 47%
A bold, deep bourbon forged by the Texas heat
Taste & aroma Caramel, butterscotch, and vanilla with coconut and nutmeg, leather and tobacco, and winter spices. The hot climate ripens it fast, so both color and flavor are dark.
User reviews Gets cult support as a "Texas craft with vivid character." Along with praise that it's "uncompromisingly bold," the young aging and high price (around 80,000 won) draw mixed opinions.
10Hudson Baby BourbonHudson Bright Lights, Big Bourbon (formerly Baby Bourbon)NEW YORK · Tuthilltownabout 92 proof · 46%
New York's first bourbon after Prohibition, a craft pioneer
Taste & aroma 100% New York corn aged in small barrels — vanilla, caramel, and corn sweetness with cinnamon, cherry, tobacco leaf, and a marzipan nuance.
