I kept four bottles of Nikka whisky by my side for a while and slowly emptied them. This time, I cross-checked the tasting memos I'd jotted down — nose buried in the glass, rolling it on my tongue — one by one against Whiskybase ratings, World Whiskies Awards records, and overseas reviewers' scores. Is my palate unusual, or how much does it overlap with the world's assessments? — I unpack that answer through these tasting notes on four bottles.
First, a point to note. Nikka has two distilleries with opposite characters. The heavy, smoky Yoichi and the bright, elegant Miyagikyo. Today's four are a lineup where those two spirits are blended in different ratios (blended/pure malt) or where only one is contained (single malt), so they're perfect for sweeping through Nikka's spectrum at once.

meet the world's scores"
① Black Nikka SpecialBlack Nikka Special · Blended · 42% · 700ml
The 'bearded gentleman' mosaic label that has carried on since 1965. It's the most easygoing daily bottle.

A sweetness like ripe apple and cream soda comes first, followed by grain notes of vanilla, barley, and cereal with a faint peppermint. A touch of nuts and light smoke.
On a light body, the soft sweetness of cream, vanilla, and oatmeal, with a citrus acidity like yuzu and grapefruit holding the balance, and a light spice of white pepper passing through.
Vanilla, oak, and honey linger, with a faint mid-length aftertaste of biscuit, caramel, and cacao.
A daily blend based on Yoichi spirit. Light, but with sweetness and spice mixed in just right, so it's easy-going.
Overall No flashy knockout punch, but solid fundamentals that are great to enjoy comfortably every day. A passing grade as a value daily. ★★★☆ (3.5/5)
Overseas, too, the verdict is "a drink with sweetness and spice mixed in moderately, fine for everyday drinking, though there's no eureka moment." It's almost the same grain as my ★3.5.
② Taketsuru Pure MaltTaketsuru Pure Malt · Blended Malt · 43% · 700ml
The flagship malt bearing the founder's name. It's a pure malt blending Yoichi and Miyagikyo.

Grapefruit and sherry lead, with roasted malt laid beneath raisin and red-wine nuances. Between the softness of light honey and vanilla, a faint peat hides that you have to concentrate to catch.
The smooth sweetness of sherry and dried fruit, with the crispness of green apple sharply holding the balance. A texture of caramel and light pipe tobacco.
It starts with oak and malt, followed by sherry and red fruit, and at the end a faint sweetness of vanilla cream. Medium in length.
As befits a pure malt blending two distilleries, a soft texture where peat and sherry mingle in harmony.
Overall A balanced malt combining the strengths of Nikka's two distilleries. The complexity on the nose doesn't fully carry through to the palate, but it's a completeness that's hard to fault. ★★★★ (4/5)
A proven bottle that won 'World's Best Blended Malt' at the World Whiskies Awards 2023. In effect, the global panel also recognized the 'balance' I felt, blind.
③ The Nikka TailoredThe Nikka Tailored · Premium Blended · 43% · 700ml
A premium blend in an asymmetrical bottle resembling a kimono collar, released as the successor to the discontinued 'Nikka 12 Years.'

Bright fruit notes of apple, pomegranate, and banana spread elegantly, with sandalwood, honey, and coconut joined by herbal nuances like fennel and anise.
A creamy texture with a very faint woodsmoke, malt and dark caramel, a square of chocolate. The pastry sweetness of vanilla and kouglof coexists in a single sip with the bitterness of dark chocolate and tangerine peel.
Rather short. Oak lingers briefly before settling into a honey-like sweetness, and a toasty nuance reins in the sweetness and bitterness.
A soft, easy-going texture. Great for comfortable daily drinking.
Overall A premium blend with a sweet nose, a clean palate, and excellent drinkability. The shallow finish is a shame, but it's complex and harmonious. ★★★★ (4/5)
Overseas reviews like Words of Whisky judge it "well-balanced and skillfully blended, but the short finish docked points." They point out exactly the same weakness I wrote down — that 'the finish is shallow.'
④ Miyagikyo Single MaltNikka Miyagikyo Single Malt · Single Malt · 45% · 700ml
The only single malt among today's four. It's the essence of the bright, elegant Miyagikyo distillery.

The honey-like sweetness of a bourbon cask, the florality of wildflowers, and fruit notes of apple, pear, and banana. Cooked apple and honey recall an apple-pie filling, with sherry, tropical fruit, and light woodsmoke laid underneath.
A medium body with an oily, buttery texture. The sweetness of honey, green apple and lemon, and a mineral saltiness like sea breeze. Cinnamon and ginger spice, with chocolate and licorice wrapping around the malt.
It starts with the soft, bittersweet sweetness of dark chocolate, then the tingle of pepper and the cooling of mint remain. At medium length, the bite and fruit hit and pull back in just the right measure.
A crisp, smooth swallow with the sweetness of dried fruit. A comfortable body that pairs well with any dish.
Overall If Yoichi is robust, Miyagikyo is on the bright, elegant side. A single malt with a clear floral and fruity charm. ★★★★ (4/5)
In the 83-point range based on 608 ratings — the highest overseas score among today's four. The dominant verdict is "a clean entry-level single malt with clear fruit and floral notes."
